RESIDENCE 'RACHTA'

From Stratis Myrivilis' novel "Panagia Gorgona".

In this area, a few meters away from the barely urbanized Skala Sykamias, on an olive grove entirely shaped by stone-built terraces - of unparalleled aesthetic and historical value - we designed the Residence Ta Rachta.

The architecture of the place is defined here by the environmental actions of wind, water, stone, and olive trees that sculpt the landscape through the centuries.

Thus arises the need to design a residence that becomes one with the environment, where outdoor spaces succeed indoor spaces, expanding the boundaries between landscape and building. The residence is split into two stone volumes and divided into two levels, with the floor receding in relation to the ground floor, thus following the topography of the olive grove and the built terraces.

The building's design reflects the simplicity of the place and the owners' need for privacy.

Approaching the building from afar, through the paved path of natural stones, the visitor passes between the two olive trees - the residence's trademark - and comes face to face with an introverted facade. The gradation of shading, from the outdoor space to the semi-outdoor space, finally leads you to the interior of the residence.

The main spaces face the view, while the auxiliary spaces are designed at the back. The semi-outdoor space is a continuation of the kitchen, while in the bedroom a separate covered space is designed. The living room connects with the olive grove, which it overlooks amphitheatrically, through a large opening. Two skylights are designed at the back of the building, introducing light and air into the kitchen and auxiliary spaces.

The upper floor consists of two bedrooms and a bathroom, while its front veranda offers unobstructed views, not only towards the sea but also towards the settlement of Sykamia, which is perched on the opposite rock. Thus, the facades of the residence towards the view are noticeably more extroverted compared to the other sides facing the road.
