ARCHITECT ENGINEER

RESIDENCE "TO KATAFYGIO" IN LEPETYMNOS

At the foothills of Mount Lepetymnos, just above Eftalou beach, on a steep olive grove, I designed To Katafygio (The Refuge). The architecture of the place is defined here by the environmental actions of wind, water, and stone that sculpt the landscape through the centuries. Thus arises the need to compose a residence that will provide safety against these harsh actions at times, a residence that will be sheltered under a unified protective roof.

The building adapts to the site's topography and thus the residence develops on a plateau parallel to the ground slope. Its main spaces face north towards the view, while auxiliary spaces are designed at the back. The atrium serves as a refuge from strong north winds and provides necessary lighting and ventilation to the residence. It develops on the south side, around an olive tree that serves as its defining point. The loft is a space of tranquility and relaxation as it features glass 'observatories' which offer a view protected from winds yet unobstructed towards the Aegean and the Asia Minor coasts. Exterior spaces providing sun protection depending on the time of day and its direction are designed at different points of the building. The residence reflects the owners' need for isolation in an environment that offers them peace and security.
